Ind. Senate panel backs cursive writing teaching

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana's schools would be required to teach cursive writing under a bill approved by a state legislative committee.
The state Senate Education Committee voted 7-4 Wednesday to advance the bill to the full Senate.
Sen. Jean Leising of Oldenburg says she believes it's important that all children learn cursive writing even though the Indiana Department of Education in 2011 dropped it as a requirement in favor of student proficiency in keyboard use.
A couple senators who voted in favor of the bill said they weren't certain they would support it becoming law. Sen. Pete Miller of Avon said he voted no because he doesn't think legislators should be deciding school curriculum.
The state Senate approved a similar bill last year, but it didn't advance in the House.
