Indianapolis Motor Speedway eyes zip line

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - It was the most popular attraction in the Super Bowl Village: the zipline.

As people work to take it down this week, 24-Hour News 8 has learned there could be another zipline coming to Indy soon.

Shortly after the zipline in Super Bowl Village opened, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway started getting emails, tweets, and Facebook comments suggesting they add a zipline in May during the Indianapolis 500.

“I don’t know timing-wise if it can happen, and there are a couple other logistical things we would have to figure out. A) if we want to do that, where would that take place? And then, we need to understand the business side, and costs … ," said Doug Boles, vice president of communication at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "What does it cost to operate? And does it make financial sense for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to do that?”

Boles said he’d like to sit down with Super Bowl Committee members at some point to discuss how it went for them. He said IMS would need to decide by mid-March on the zipline.

“The Speedway opens up in May," he said, "so we're on a short timeframe, but we're committed to taking a look at it and seeing if it makes sense here.”

Super Bowl Host Committee member Dianna Boyce said the committee didn’t make any money off the zipline in Super Bowl Village. It cost just $10 a ride.

“The idea of the zip line … was never intended to be a money-maker for the Host Committee," she said, "so we priced it such that people be able to afford it.”

Boyce said 10,429 people flew down the zipline in Super Bowl Village. Ticket proceeds were added to the group's bottom line.

Officials at other ziplines around Indiana say they’ve received more phone calls and inquiries because of the popularity of the zipline in Indy.
