INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The federal government's latest drought update shows that Indiana's drought has worsened in the past week and that a quarter of the state is now in the grips of an exceptional drought.

But Thursday's update of the U.S. Drought Monitor also shows recent rains have lessened drought conditions in northern Indiana.

The federal map classifies drought into four stages ranging from moderate to exceptional. Thursday's update shows 24 percent of the state is now in the midst of an exceptional drought, up from about 18 percent last week.

That parched area runs from around Terre Haute to Indianapolis and then south to the Ohio River about 30 miles east of Evansville.

About 85 percent of the state is now facing at least severe drought conditions.
