INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard's office said Thursday night that the mayor would be extending the fireworks ban, set to expire Friday.
Ballard will extend the ban through July 9. Then, on July 10, the regular city ordinance banning the use of fireworks will kick back in.
State law prohibits fireworks bans around the Independence Day holiday, but municipalities can get around that by issuing emergency declarations, and many have done so in light of the prolonged dry spell and extreme heat this summer.
Ballard issued an emergency declaration banning the personal use of fireworks in Indianapolis and Marion County on June 30.
The Indianapolis ban was among several others around the state that banned personal - and sometimes professional - use of fireworks.
The state is under an excessive heat warning through Saturday night.
