Indy fleet pushes for electric vehicles

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis is pushing to become a leader in new technology.

Mayor Greg Ballard and IPL announced  Monday that IPL will buy and install electric vehicle charging stations for three city vehicle fleet locations.

The partnership is part of the Mayor's initiative to transform the city's vehicle fleet to post-oil alternatives by the year 2025. The move would make Indianapolis the first city in the nation to do so.

"As a veteran of the Gulf War, i think everyone knows I've been concerned about our dependence on foreign oil and how it compromises our national security.  Now, technology allows us to change that dynamic and save money at the same time," Mayor Ballard said.

The charging stations will go in at 1200 Madison Avenue, the City County Building, and the Julia Carson Center in early Spring.

The only city-owned cars that wouldn't be electric would be police cars.
