Indy museum to host Matisse collection

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Later this year, Central Indiana will become the temporary home to some historic works of art.

Starting in October, The Indianapolis Museum of Art will host a major Henri Matisse collection.

The exhibition is called "Matisse, Life in Color," and it is organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art .

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard joined IMA leaders Thursday morning to make the announcement. 

The exhibit will feature nearly 80 sculptures, paintings and drawings in all from various stages of Matisse's groundbreaking career.

“And so we will have Matisse's life represented from his early days in art school in France all the way up through what you may recognize in your mind thinking Matisse:  the cutouts, the Jazz series, from the 1940s right before his death," IMA Director Charles L. Venable explained.

IMA members will be able to see it free. It will cost non-member $18 for adults, $10 for students and no charge for children 6 or younger.
