INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A sea lion that survived gunshot wounds, illness and the loss of an eye in California is the newest addition to the Indianapolis Zoo.

Zoo officials announced Friday that the sea lion named Ray had arrived after a cross-country flight and would be in quarantine for 30 days before going on display.

Ray was rescued twice in California. He was discovered ill and suffering from gunshot pellets to his torso and skull in November 2011. Ray was returned to the harbor after treatment but was found with another gunshot wound in March.

Veterinarians removed his injured right eye, along with a cataract in his left eye.

The 270-pound sea lion is believed to be 4 to 5 years old. Sea lions typically live 20 years or more.
