IPS Superintendent gives progress plan

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Eugene White said the district wants "every school to be an outstanding school." Monday night, he offered a progress report to describe how the school system is moving toward that goal.

His report said IPS offers the broadest range of magnet choices in the state of Indiana. But he said he doesn't want those options to come at the expense of neighborhood schools. Some parents want that option to be preserved.

White also acknowledged concerns about discipline - and violence - in schools. He said that's a problem that doesn't start at school.

"We are in an urban setting. In the school district, we are going to deal with people who are violent, and we're going to put them in alternative schools. We may put them out. But that still doesn’t solve the problem of violence," White said.

A former IPS board member criticized White's progress report, though.

Kelly Bentley tweeted: "Gene White presented nothing new. It was more of a marketing plan than a plan to transform education in Indianapolis."
