IUPUI staff, student pull switcheroo

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - It's been more than 20 years since Dr. Zeb Davenport, Vice Chancellor for Student Life at IUPUI , set foot in a classroom as an undergraduate student. That changes Tuesday when Davenport becomes an undergraduate student for a day.

Davenport will trade places with Mechanical Engineering student Tim Allen as a result of a Greek sponsored fundraiser last semester. The Vice Chancellor recalled on WISH-TV's Daybreak how the swap came about.

"The students came to me," says Davenport. "One of the things that caught my attention was that they were going to, in the midst of the [Greek Week] activity, have a fundraiser."

The fundraiser directly benefited charity: water , a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. The IUPUI Greek Community held a "Penny Wars" fundraiser with the purpose of donating toward a project to build wells in Africa.

"I said 'the winner of your fundraising event, I will swap places with that person for one day,'" said Davenport.

Tim Allen, a junior, won the competition and is ready for the Vice Chancellor to live his life today.

"I don't think he'll understand what they're even saying," says Tim Allen, talking about his Mechanical Engineering course.

When asked what he hopes the Vice Chancellor will learn from his student swap, Allen replied, "I hope he sees something that should be in place, but isn't, and can fix that."

Allen will shadow the Vice Chancellor on Friday, Feb. 22. Their schedules are below:
