LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) - Lawrence Mayor Dean Jessup announced Thursday that the city will adopt a balanced budget.

The Lawrence Common Council unanimously adopted a balanced 2013 city budget. Mayor Jessup plans to sign the budget Friday.

At the end of 2013 a small surplus in the general fund is projected.

Thursday, Mayor Jessup released the following statement:

“After two years of overspending and revenue shortfalls, the city of Lawrence is now living within its means. I want to thank the members of the Lawrence Common Council for their hard work in approving this budget.

Getting to balanced city spending was incredibly difficult. We inherited our financial troubles and the personnel cuts we made were not the fault of our hardworking employees. I’m glad that Monarch Beverage agreed and is now offering our former EMTs preferential hiring for their open positions. With committed residents and businesses, our growing city is turning the corner on a challenging year.”
