LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) - A Pike Township firefighter was killed and two children were injured in a Lawrence area crash Thursday afternoon.

The Pike Township Fire Department said James C. Shelly, 35, was killed in the crash on Pendleton Pike near 56th Street when a box truck hit the vehicle Shelly was driving head-on.

A semitrailer was eastbound on Pendleton Pike near 56th Street when a smaller box truck slammed into the back of it for an unknown reason, officials say. The box truck bounced off the semitrailer and into the eastbound lane, striking the Chevrolet Avalanche Shelly was driving.

Two children in the vehicle with Shelly were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital.
