Local group outraged after store won't fill gay group's rainbow cookie order

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Members of a local civil rights organization are demanding answers after allegations a local cookie store refused to fill an order for a gay student group.

On Friday, 24-Hour News 8 reported that members of a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group at IUPUI said Indianapolis business Just Cookies denied their order for rainbow-themed treats. The cookies were going to be part of the group’s celebration of National Coming Out Day next month.

After seeing our report, Get Equal Indiana's Randy Wigle and David Stevens met with the bakery's owner.

"So my money is not good here?" Wigle asked after the owner politely told him she could not provide chocolate chip cookies with sprinkles.

In response to his question she said, "Sir, you can buy anything that I have for sale but I can not make what you are asking. I am sorry."

She insisted the bakery doesn't make custom orders.

Stevens and Wigle echoed the student group, saying they were discriminated against. They are planning to protest the bakery in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the bakery caught the attention of city leaders, including Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.

The mayor's spokesperson, Robert Vane, said the incident is not going unnoticed.

"There should not be a litmus test for buying cookies,” Vane said. “If you are going to do business in the City Market, then you need to do business with everybody."
