Long lines surround Indy gun, knife show

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A record-breaking crowd waited in line as long as four hours Friday for the first day of the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show at the State Fairgrounds.

“Never seen anything like it!” one man said as he stared at the hundreds of people in front of him.

As for why – those waiting in line said that’s easy.

"Everybody's scared,” said Jerald Williamson. “They think they aren’t going to have a gun anymore."

"Just because of the threatened ban,” said Bill Davis. “Everybody's trying to get stuff while they can.”

Organizers said they expected the crowds.

“Normally we average between 8,000 and 10,000 at every gun show,” said spokeswoman Ashley Varner. “We did know that we were going to have significantly more people at this particular show. We did know that we were going to have significantly more people at this particular gun show just because of the news because of the recent discussion we've been having about gun control.”

"When we don't know what's going to come out of Congress or the White House in the next few weeks or months, they certainly want to come together,” she said. “They want to purchase products while they feel they still can and there's really a sense of community and finding kindred spirits and friends here when you come to a gun show and you know that you're surrounded by people who care about the same things you do."

The show ended at 8 p.m. Friday, but continues Saturday from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
