INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - After Friday, it’ll be lights out for the Pepsi Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds for nearly two years.
The iconic building at the Indiana State Fairgrounds is set for an almost two-year renovation project after 73 years of hosting thousands of events. The project – which will gut the inside of the building completely and rebuild - is budgeted at $63 million.
Renovations will start Friday night after the FFA rodeo.
It’s likely that most Hoosiers have been to the Coliseum at one time or another.
The Beatles, Elvis, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and The Who performed there over the years.
John F. Kennedy made a stop at the Coliseum in 1960 as part of his presidential campaign tour.
The site has been home to the Pacers and the Indiana Ice.
It’s also been home to tragedy. In 1963, a propane explosion inside the Coliseum killed 74 people and wounded hundreds
Doors will be closed for 21 months for the renovation, but the public has one last chance to see inside: An open house is set for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
