INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A man was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon after he drowned in a retention pond in a southeast side housing addition, Indianapolis Fire Department said.
Rescue crews were called to the 7200 block of Bobcat Trail Dr. at 3:40 p.m. Saturday to the report of the man drowning.
The 51-year-old man was reportedly fishing with a friend when he entered the lake.
The victim's friend and neighboring residents saw him go under water and called 911.
Prior to entering the water, the victim and his friend had several drinks, according to an IFD release. The victim's friend says he was a good swimmer.
The victim reportedly told his friend he wanted to cool off, and then entered the pond.
The man was taken to St. Francis South where he was pronounced dead.
IFD firefighters would like to remind residents to stay out of retention ponds as they are unpredictable bodies of water and not intended for swimming.
