Man gets Bronze Star 68 years late

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A veteran was awarded the Bronze Star this Memorial Day.

The catch is it’s about 68 years later. Staff Sgt. Wayne Bucy was in the 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought his way across France and into Belgium, where he was shot.

Bucy may have received the Purple Heart, but he was never given the Bronze Star. He was supposed to receive it but it mistakenly went to another person who had a similar name in the same hospital where Bucy was recovering.

His daughter, Linda, says this is an honor not only for her dad but for the entire family as well.

“He’s not someone to call a lot of attention to himself,” she said. “I think he’s really enjoying today.”

At Monday’s ceremony, they also took time to remember those who gave their lives serving in the military. They honored all branches of the military as well as the prisoners of war and those missing in action.
