INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police say a man attempting to rob a Kroger was shot in the face by an employee of the store on Monday evening, and later died.
Around 6 p.m., IMPD responded to the 5000 block of West 71st Street to investigate a possible robbery and shots fired.
While police were en route to the incident, they received information that someone had been shot, according to police reports.
Upon arrival, police found 26-year-old Jeremy Atkinson had been shot in the face.
Police are still investigating, but they believe Atkinson was attempting to rob the store.
When the alleged robber entered the store, reports state that he forced a female employee into an office area while holding a hard object against her back.
As they entered the office, a second employee noticed them and shot the suspect in the face.
Atkinson was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died Monday night.
Kroger employees were questioned. The Marion County prosecutor's office says an arrest is not expected.
Police said Atkinson escaped from a halfway house in October. He was there due to previous robbery and gun offenses.
