INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis Fire Department was dispatched to 50 East 16th Street near the CVS pharmacy around 3 p.m. Sunday where a manhole explosion was reported.
Eight units were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the manhole was smoking slightly but was under control within 15 minutes, according to IFD.
Indianapolis Power and Light Company was also dispatched to the scene and disconnected power to the manhole for public safety purposes.
Brad Riley with IPL says the explosion was caused when an underground cable failed causing the power outage to about 400 customers. Crews had the power restored to customers in less than 40 minutes. Crews will assess the damage to the cable and fix it tonight. Customers will not experience any problems during the repair. A few stop lights also went out in the area, but power has been restored to those as well.
No injuries were reported.
