INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Marathoners are running to Indianapolis to escape the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Organizers for the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon say they have seen a spike over the past 48 hours in registrations for this Saturday's event.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Wednesday that Sunday's New York City Marathon will go on as planned.

Despite the decision to go forward, Sandy has wreaked havoc with travel plans for thousands of runners from across the county trying to get to the big apple this weekend.

“Were working hard this week to make this the best ever monumental but were certainly head of our record pace registrations and facing our first ever sell out,” said the marathons executive director Blake Boldon.

New York City Marathon organizers insist Sunday's race can be an inspiration to New Yorkers and benefit businesses that have lost money because of the storm.
