INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Mike Tyson has returned to Indianapolis. The last time the former heavyweight champion was in the Circle City, he was leaving jail after serving three years for rape.
Now, Tyson is back, making the rounds, promoting his one-man show "Mike Tyson, Undisputed Truth Tour." Tyson was at WISH-TV on Tuesday to talk about his touring show on IndyStyle . But before he went into that interview, 24-Hour News 8 Anchor David Barras interviewed him.
He told Barras that the decision to start his 10 week road tour in Indianapolis wasn't his own.
"They wanted me here. That's why I'm here," Tyson said. "People would think, this is a nightmare. No, this is a wonderful place.I have friends here, says Tyson.
But in 1992, Tyson was in town for a very different reason.
Tyson was convicted in February 1992 of raping Desiree Washington in July of 1991. Washington was a contestant in the Miss Black Expo contest in Indianapolis. Convicted, Tyson served three years at the Indiana Youth Center, now known as the Plainfield Correctional Facility. He was released in 1995 and this is his first trip back to Indy.
Tyson told Barras he is different now than he was then. And, he says, his show will explain that.
"I don't think about it. It's a part of my life. A moment in time. And I moved on from it," Tyson says. "That's 21 years ago. I'm adamant to believe I was falsely accused of that. I'm not going to cry over spilt milk. And ever since then, everything's been pretty cool," he says.
Posing for pictures with anyone who asks, Tyson insists he's a kinder, gentler Mike.
"What I'm trying to convey is gratitude. I'm very grateful for all the fans that continue to support me," he says. "It's a roller coaster of emotions. It's going to be pretty provocative. Ambiguous. Sad. Happy. You know, ups and downs, like life," he says.
Tyson's show is Wednesday night. The show is between an hour and a half and two hours. He says he's invited the local attorneys who represented him in his rape trial and he also invited the Judge who presided over the trial, Patricia Gifford.
He didn't know if she will be there.
Originally his show was going to run two nights, but that was cut back to just one.
