Mom charged with murder in fire that killed 7-year-old son

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis mother was charged with murdering her son in a meth blast that caught their home on fire.

Court documents released Thursday reveal new details about the night of the fire.

The nine page probable cause affidavit paints a disturbing picture of a mother on drugs and alcohol and a 7-year-old boy repeatedly yelling "mommy help me" as he burned in the flames police say she started.

The fire was just a mile from the Indianapolis Zoo at a home in the 1800 block of West Washington Street. It prompted a dozen neighbors in the apartment building to jump or run to safety.

In one call to 911, a caller says, "There's a fire and I'm trapped upstairs."  The 911 operator asks if there is anyone in the building and the caller replies, "Yes, lots of people in here. Babies and all kinds of things. Please hurry, I can't breathe and it's getting hot. I don't want to jump."

One of those babies was 7-year-old Dreydon Webb. Police say that night his mother, 30-year-old Jessica Rogers was cooking meth, starting the fire that eventually killed her son.

Rogers and her boyfriend jumped from a second story window to safety, leaving the boy trapped upstairs. She told firefighters she tried to get her son out but couldn't keep a hold on him. Police say the apartment was small with little furniture. "There are few if any places...to get lost,” according to court documents.

Her boyfriend told police he heard Dreydon saying, "help me mommy" four or five times before they jumped, according to the probable cause affidavit. It went on to say that once on the ground, the boyfriend asked Rogers, "Where is Drey?" When she told him Dreydon was still inside he asked her, "How could you leave him in there?" The boyfriend also says after they jumped out the window he could still hear Dreydon yelling, "Help me Mommy, Mommy, help me" from inside.

One neighbor says once on the ground Rogers told her, "I messed up and it blew up in my face,” according to court documents. She also asked a firefighter, "Am I going to jail for this?"  Then once at the hospital, asked a nurse, "Am I going to be in trouble for this?"  Detectives say while questioned at the hospital she "showed very little if any remorse or emotion about the death of her son."

Investigators say Rogers had splash burns on her neck and chin. Neighbors described the smell of meth production coming from the apartment. Rogers is charged with murder, arson, neglect and possession of cocaine. That night at the hospital she tested positive for amphetamines, methamphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates and alcohol.
