INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The group Mothers Against Violence held a march Saturday on the city’s East Side, near 29th Street and College Avenue.
Organizers said that area in particular is plagued with crime, but anyone, anywhere can get caught in the crossfire.
“When they start shooting, everybody who's around may be a victim of gun violence, and they don't care,” said Reverend Charles Harrison with the Ten Point Coalition.
Harrison knows the violence too well having attended three funerals Saturday before the march.
All, he said, were victims of gang violence last weekend.
One was a shooting at a Speedway gas station; the victim was shot while sitting inside a truck.
Two men were killed near Cloud 9 early last Sunday morning.
“We probably have probably 100 different gangs or clicks or crews in this city,” he said. “And we're trying to get the city, the community to wake up to this problem.”
Interim IMPD Chief Rick Hite also attended the walk.
“Indy's a good town,” Hite said. “We have a few folks who didn't get the memo that violence is unacceptable.”
Reverend Harrison said he plans on more community outreach, starting at churches throughout the city on Sunday.
