New tool catches cars following too close

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - As you hit the highway for the holidays, an important reminder – Indiana State Police will be watching you.

Police will be using a new tool that looks like a radar gun, but it is much more than that. State Troopers will not only watch your speed, but find out if you are tailgating.

With laser technology and geometry, police can tell how close you are to the vehicle in front of you. Too close, and you can expect a ticket.

Police say you should use the three second rule to make sure you are at a safe distance, said Indiana State Trooper Chris Kath.

"A vehicle in front of you passes any point, say a shadow in the road. And if you count 'one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand,' before you pass that same point, you are at a safe following distance," he said.

You can get a tailgating ticket in addition to a speeding ticket and that will cost you more money than a speeding ticket alone.
