INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Pyrotechnics and strange bird calls will begin Monday night in Indianapolis as the United State Department of Agriculture begins its annual effort to scare away non-native birds.
The efforts will begin Monday night and will continue periodically, according to the USDA’s Wildlife Services.
The organization uses various methods to discourage starlings and crows from roosting downtown in the fall. The USDA says it does it because the non-native birds compete for nesting space with native songbirds. The non-native birds also pose a potential health and sanitation problem.
The USDA uses pyrotechnics that create loud shrills and booms. The organization also uses lasers and recorded bird calls as deterrents.
