Not too late to save money on energy bills this winter

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - If you've been procrastinating this winter, this week’s bitterly cold temperatures could be the push you need to add some winter protection to your home.

Experts tell us it’s not too late to add some inexpensive products to your home to keep out drafty air.

Keith Payne at North Meridian Hardware says he’s seeing window insulation kits fly off the shelves these days.

“This is a very hot ticket item for us, we can’t keep these on the shelves… people keep coming in,” said Payne.

That’s not the only item people are looking for right now. Window and door seals are also selling.

“You can still save $20-$60 a month, if you fully winterize your home,” added Payne.

“It’s never too late to do this stuff. Just run down to the store, and there are relatively inexpensive things to do,” said Mike Chamberlain, with MC2 Home Inspections.

Chamberlain inspects homes for a living.

He gave us a list of inexpensive ways to save money, as the temperatures get colder this season.

  • Weather stripping on doors
  • Add “draft dodgers” to doors
  • Put blackout curtains up on sliding glass doors to keep cold air out
  • Open blinds during the day to let in light and heat; close at night to keep heat in
  • Purchase receptacle insulators for your electrical sockets. Keeps air from coming in through sockets on exterior walls
  • Programmable thermostat
  • If your water heater is outside, purchase a wrap to go around it
  • Have someone check your furnace each winter, and change the filter regularly
