INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indiana State Police have identified a man who was fatally struck overnight on I-70 on the city’s far east side.
Around 1:30 a.m. a motorist reported to police he saw a semi off to the side of the road just east of Mitthoeffer Road and it appeared the had struck a deer.
Police say it was not a deer but a male pedestrian in the roadway that had been hit.
The man was dead at the scene. He has been identified as 33-year-old Johnny Rat Cole.
Investigators say the semi driver initially stopped at the scene but then went on to the Mount Comfort Road exit to report the incident.
The driver was taken for a voluntary blood draw which is procedure in fatal accidents.
Police do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident. Investigators say it appears the pedestrian was standing in the center lane of I-70 when he was struck.
State police are coordinating their investigation with the Marion County prosecutor’s office.
All eastbound lanes of I-70 reopened at 5 a.m.
