INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis woman is dead after police say her son shot and killed her.

Police believe an argument over trash led to the shooting. The victim was shot multiple times and pronounced dead on scene. She has been identified as 54-year-old Paula Day.  Police say children were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Several minutes after police arrived on scene, Morgan County dispatchers alerted IMPD that a possible suspect had turned himself in to police. The woman's son, identified as 36-year-old Eric Bowan, was found in Morgan County suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police believe he fled the scene directly following the shooting. It's unclear how he got to Morgan County. Officials say he is now at Wishard Hospital. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Police have preliminarily charged Bowan with murder. Officials will determine an exact cause of death after an autopsy is performed.

Someone calling 911 reported the shooting in the 6000 block of Nolte.
