INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro Police say a man was shot while talking to police during a traffic stop on the north side Monday night. Officers set up a perimeter in the neighborhood, called out police dogs and even dispatched members of SWAT to search for the shooter.

The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. in the 4200 block of North Carrollton.

Police say the Violent Crimes Unit was conducting an investigation in the area when they made a traffic stop.

Police handcuffed a 24-year-old driver and sat him on a porch in the 42nd block of Carrollton. There were a couple of officers making the traffic arrest and several other members of the VCU in the area when they heard a gunshot.

The bullet hit the 24-year-old in the stomach. Police believe the shot came from east of Carrollton but they didn’t see who fired the shot. They believe the shooter ran away.

Police say they are not sure exactly who the gunman was trying to shoot.

“Part of the investigation right now is trying to determine not only who the shooter is, but who is the intended target. We are not sure if they intended to shoot the man who was in custody or one of the officers who was standing nearby,” said IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson.

The man was taken to Wishard Hospital in stable condition and is expected to be OK.
