Police fight crime with new approach

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is coming up with a new approach to fighting crime in Indianapolis.

Currently, police are using zone policing, where officers respond to all calls, but stay closer to areas with the most crime.

Officers moved to zone patrols earlier this year from their old beat patrols system. Beats involved officers patrolling a smaller geographic area, putting them in closer contact with neighbors.

The new Deputy Public Safety Director says neighborhood groups are looking forward to this new change.

“We have been to community meetings and the public is excited about this,” said Valerie Washington, Deputy Public Safety Director. “They like the idea they are very excited and they got positive feed back.”

In addition to the change in policing, the department is looking to re-assign more officers from desk duties back to street patrols.
