Officers fatally shoot burglary suspect

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says an officer fatally shot a man believed to be a burglar.

The shooting happened in the 3800 block of North Arlington Ave. on the city's northeast side.

Officials say homeowners in the area called police when they found signs of forced entry into their home. The homeowners believed someone had broken into their home and remained outside until police arrived on scene.

Police arrived on scene and searched the home. They were told by homeowners that the residents has several weapons and ammunition inside the residence.

At least two officers went to the basement and found a man hiding. Shots were fired, and the suspect was fatally shot by an officer. The suspect was pronounced dead on scene. No police officers were injured in the incident. It is still unclear exactly what happened in the basement and the suspect's identity has not yet been released.

It is not yet clear if the suspect had a weapon or what type of weapon they may have had. The officers involved have been identified as Christopher Wilburn and Erik Keyes. Both will be placed on administrative lead during the investigation.

Police are still interviewing people involved and investigating this incident. Deputy Chief Greg Bieberich says officers are just beginning to look for evidence. More concrete information is expected in the morning.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m.
