INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis man faces charges after police say he hid an unlicensed handgun underneath a 1-year-old baby during a Mother’s Day traffic stop.

Police say Jamaar A. Bellamy was pulled over for a traffic violation when an officer noticed him reaching into the backseat making “furtive” movements. The officer asked Bellamy if there were any guns in the car, to which he responded “No…you’re not going to search the car, are you?”

Bellamy allegedly told police he had a suspended license and shouldn’t be driving. He pleaded with the officer, asking him not to take him to jail because it was “Mother’s day.”

Soon other officers arrived on the scene and determined Bellamy smelled like alcohol and may have been intoxicated.

The officers searched the vehicle where they noticed the baby unbuckled in the car seat, sitting forward as if he was sitting on something. The officers picked up the child only to find a .45 pistol in the car seat. Officers also found marijuana and a scale in the car.

It was at that point, police say, that Bellamy became belligerent and aggressive towards officers; prompting one of the officers to spray him with mace in order to subdue him.

An ambulance was called to the scene to treat Bellamy for an asthma attack. Once at the hospital, a nurse drew blood in order to determine Bellamy’s blood-alcohol-content level.

Police arrested Bellamy on charges of possession of an unlicensed handgun, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement, neglect of a child, possession of marijuana and numerous traffic violations.

Police also arrested Tyechia F Montgomery, the car’s female passenger, on charges of negligent of a dependent child and possession of marijuana.

CPS was called to the scene to take custody of the child and a 4-year-old sibling also in the vehicle.
