INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department are looking for the person who shot two men Wednesday afternoon, critically injuring one of them.
The shootings happened in the 4600 block of Winthrop Avenue on the city's north side.
According to a police report, Daniel Bunton, 18, of Indianapolis, is in critical condition after being shot in the chest. Oshae Simmons, 18, of Indianapolis, was also shot although his injuries are unknown Thursday.
Police have not identified the gunman and did not say much about the shooting on Wednesday.
24-Hour News 8 has learned both victims were shot at one scene. One of the victims received help from an IMPD officer.
Crime scene tape marks the spot of the shooting, a shooting that happened in broad daylight.
"I thought I heard the popping; he thought he heard some popping sounds," said Jeff Piper of Indianapolis.
Piper was at his office near 46th Street and Winthrop Avenue when he heard the gunshots.
"We didn't realize what was going on until we looked out and were surrounded by pretty much 360 by officers," he said.
Those officers blocked off a section of 46th and Winthrop. They also taped off a portion of 46th and Carvel streets after one of the two victims ran there for help.
The victim encountered an officer who attempted first aid. Medics took both victims to Wishard Memorial Hospital.
"It's kind of rough," said David Rossi of Indianapolis.
Rossi is new to the Broad Ripple neighborhood.
"I just moved here a couple of months ago and I've already seen like three shootings," Rossi said.
Rossi said in the three months he's lived in the community he's noticed crime, but not in the middle of the afternoon.
"It does get more worse at night, but it is kind of surprising in the day. But shootings are kind of the normal around here," he said.
Piper agreed.
"It's kind of bad being in the middle of the day. Expect a little trouble around here at night. The area changes when the sun goes down, but not in the middle of the day," Piper said.
Police fatally shot a pit bull at a home near 42nd Street and Carrollton where they identified three people as possible suspects. They placed those individuals in handcuffs, but they were later released.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
