Police to crackdown on railroad safety

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Police throughout Indiana are planning to crack down on people disregarding railroad crossing warnings and people who walk on railroad rights of way.
Gov. Mitch Daniels has declared Aug. 26 through Sept. 1 as Indiana Rail Safety Week. Indiana Operation Lifesaver Executive Director Jessica Feder says every collision between a vehicle or person and a train is preventable.
Indiana Operation Lifesaver has scheduled numerous enforcement blitzes throughout Indiana involving law enforcement agencies. There will also be public service announcements about the effort.
Last year there were 116 railroad crossing collisions resulting in 38 people injured and 10 fatalities in Indiana. Another 11 people died walking along railroad rights of way and nine more were injured.
