INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An 18-year-old is in critical condition after being shot several times Thursday evening. The shooting happened right across the street from IPS school 69, an elementary school where kids were outside playing.

Police said 18-year-old victim Odell Skinner was driving a scooter across a Sunoco gas station parking lot near 34th and Keystone Avenue when he was confronted by two armed suspects, both riding bicycles.

Police said the gunmen opened fire, hitting Skinner at least twice in the chest. Skinner continued riding across Keystone Avenue, where he crashed his scooter, got up and ran north to IPS 69 where he collapsed.

"Kids are getting out from after-school activities and tutoring. Who knows? One of those bullets could've hit a young baby trying to better their lives and get an education, we don't know," one neighbor said.

Parks department spokesperson Jennifer McGilvray said about 15 kids were outside when it happened.

"They were on the other side of the playground and the doors were locked and everyone was perfectly safe and fine," she said.

Skinner, meanwhile, was rushed to Wishard Hospital. Police say he's expected to recover.

Police said they're still looking for the shooters. They say one suspect may have taken his shirt off before jumping into a silver or gray Chevrolet vehicle and leaving the area.

Officers said they questioned and released a 17-year-old boy near the scene.

Detectives are still investigating the motive for the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to contact IMPD or call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
