INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis Metropolitan Police are investigating the discovery of possible human remains on Indy's eastside.
Shortly after midnight, officers were called to the 2800 block of North Gladstone Avenue on an investigation.
While searching for a dog, an eastside resident told police they discovered a shallow grave that contained what appeared to be human remains.
"We ran out the door and chased the dog out to the woods," a witness told 24-Hour News 8 Wednesday morning. "My cousin went to take one more step. I happened to look down and I pulled him back. We just saw some pants and bones sticking up half way out of the hole. They were blue jean pants with a brown belt around the waist. So we ran back to the house to call police."
The witness went on to say he could see some dirt still piled up against the tree where someone had dug the hole.
Even more bizarre, the witness said he found what looked to be about $500 in $20 and $50 bills along with some change near the body.
The remains were found about 100 yards behind a house in a wooded area.
A specialist from the University of Indianapolis forensics laboratory and the Marion County Coroner's office will be back on the scene this morning to conduct a more in-depth examination of the potential crime scene and possible evidence.
An autopsy will be performed to determine identity, cause and hopefully manner of death.
Police ask anyone with information about this incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477 or you can text "INDYCS" plus tip information to 274627.
