Postal workers protest cost-cutting bill

INDIANAPOLIS(WISH) - Postal workers across the nation and in Indiana protested a bill they say will destroy the postal service as we know it.
Mail carriers marched in front of the offices of Sen. Richard Lugar and Sen. Dan Coats Thursday, demanding an end to Senate Bill 1789.
If passed in its current form, the union fears 50,000 to 80,000 jobs will be eliminated, 35 million people will lose door-to-door service and Saturday delivery will come to an end in the year 2014.
“It could be that they are trying to put the Postal Service out of business because they would like to turn it over to private, and this bill would be the first step in doing that,” mail carrier Mike Beeman said.
The bill failed in the Senate in late March. It is expected to be brought up for discussion again sometime this month. This all comes after the Postal Service introduced plans to close eight Indiana processing and distribution centers.
