Repairs planned for the Monon Trail

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A drainage problem will force a disruption in traffic on the Monon Trail.

We just don't know when it will happen.

The Department of Public Works invited people to the Indiana School for the Blind on Tuesday.

It was a chance for DPW to explain its plan for repairing the problem.

It was also a chance to collect opinions about getting around the repairs.

A stretch of the trail north of 75 th Street collects water after rainy weather.

That's caused the trail to crack and crumble.

Kara Brooks of the DPW says the area has become a safety hazard.

So the department wants to close the trail.

Brooks told us no bicycles will have access to the from 86th to 75th street.

Pedestrians will be allowed to used the trail from 86th to the construction zone.

It's a $350,000 project, to install drain pipes and remove brush in the damaged area.

The DPW just doesn't know when the work will start.

Brooks says November would be most convenient for the construction staff.

But it might disrupt regular trail users.

March is another option, before trail users return in the spring.

Brooks says the weather at that time of year could complicate the work because spring is more unpredictable.

The DPW intends to use opinions gathered at the Tuesday meeting to help schedule the work.
