Riley ranked 11 for top children's hospital

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - In the March issue of Parents Magazine, Indiana's Riley Hospital for Children is ranked 11th overall and 4th in the nation for neonatal care.

Brittny Moriarty's first pregnancy was normal until one of her last check ups.

"Come to find out, she had stopped growing at 34 weeks and I had no amniotic fluid left. I was very borderline, so we did an emergency C-section," said Moriarty.

Through a haze of surgery and medicine, little Adeline Moriarty was born, with club feet, both hips dislocated, a bell-shaped chest and skeletal dysplasia.

For 25 days she stayed in a Fort Wayne Hospital but instead of getting better Adeline was getting worse.

"We finally said, 'We want to go to Riley. I think she needs more help than what you guys can give us here,'" said Moriarty.

Within the first few hours there, a team of doctors and nurses had created a complete game plan for Ady.

It's that team mentality, from the surgeons to the social workers, that Riley credits for its recognition in Parents Magazine - 4th in the nation for Neonatal Care.

"Everyone here is committed to making the life for the infant, the child, or parents easier in some of the most difficult times of their life," said Riley Neonatologist, Dr. Laura Haneline.

Brittny thinks her daughter is proof. Ady is now bubbling with personalityl.

"It's a wonderful recognition, but it's not the important one," said NICU Medical Director, Dr. William Engle.

The important recognition for Engle and his team is from families like the Moriartys who are planning to soon take little Ady home.

"It has saved her life. I mean we didn't know if she was going to make it and they have done everything they can to save her and it's turned her into this little fighter and she is so determined to make it through this," said Moriarty.

In addition to its neonatal ranking, Riley Hospital for Children was also ranked 11th overall and 7th for pulmonary care.
