Scammers name slain cop to get cash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - At least two people have been targeted by scammers using fallen Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer David Moore to try to get money.

A former police officer from Ohio tells 24-Hour News 8 he received a phone call from someone calling themselves the Police Protective League, collecting money in honor of Officer Moore. He called IMPD and made a report.

Another scammer called a woman in Indianapolis claiming to be a police officer, also saying he was collecting for Officer Moore and other fallen officers. The man told the woman his organization could accept checks or money orders and she could give at bronze, silver or gold levels. The woman called the number back, but no one picked up.

Bill Owensby, the head of Indianapolis’ Fraternal Order of Police, says his organization isn’t soliciting funds for Moore over the phone.

If anyone is interested in donating, they can in person at the Professional Police Officer’s Credit Union at 1502 E. Washington St. People can also give at FOP headquarters at 1525 S. Shelby St.

There are no phone solicitation programs authorized to raise money for Officer Moore.

The family is still determining how to use money raised in Moore’s honor.
