INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police responded to an accident on the city’s north side involving a school bus and a truck Friday afternoon.
The accident happened around 3:45 p.m. in the area of 56th Street and Allisonville Road.
Authorities say children on board were coming from the Indiana Math and Science Academy. Six children were hurt in the accident, but firefighters said the injuries appeared to be minor.
Three children were taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and three were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital. Their ages ranged from 9 to 16.
Police say the bus was heading southbound on Allisonville Road, and the truck was heading northbound. Police say the bus was turning left onto 56th Street when the truck hit the back end of the bus.
Parents ran to the scene when they heard about the crash.
“Their mother called me and said their bus had crashed. And my daughter said that she was hurt. So I was driving like crazy trying to get here as fast as I could,” said father Prince Ekhosuehr. “These are my kids. This is all I have. These kids and the two at home. I don’t know what I was thinking. This is my world right here.”
44 children in all were on the bus. Their ages range from Kindergarten to 8th grade.
The driver of the truck suffered lacerations to the face. The bus driver was not injured.
The bus is owned by Student Transit. The driver is 27 years old. He had been driving with the company for six months. He’d already dropped off about 10 students when the accident occurred.
Police say they don’t believe any tickets will be issued in the crash.
The crash is currently under investigation.
