School shifting start time, aiming for better student performance

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis school is moving the hands of time forward. Cathedral High School plans to join others in the move to start the school day later.

Wednesday, parents received a letter from the principal, letting them know classes will start 36 minutes later. Principal Dave Worland said research shows such a delay helps improve alertness and classroom performance for students.

Parents just learned about the change but are already talking about the benefits.

Mike and April Thomas said the switch will give their son more time to get adequate rest.

“We wake up at 5:30 a.m. in the morning so he can get here at 7 a.m.,” April Thomas said. “I’m sure he will enjoy sleeping in a half-hour later.”

Dr. Michael Levine, a sleep specialist with Riverview Sleep/Wake Disorders Center in Noblesville, said studies have shown that delaying the school day has big benefits beyond the classroom. He noted most teens go through a biological change that makes it nearly impossible for them to go to sleep before 10 p.m.

Meanwhile, Indianapolis Public Schools are also considering changing the school day. A spokesperson with the district said administrators will send out information this month to survey parents on the idea.

Other schools in the area, including Lawrence Township and Marion Community Schools in Grant County, have already made similar changes to their schedules.
