INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police say a semi truck carrying elevator equipment hit a bridge on Interstate 65 Friday afternoon, causing damage to the bridge and closing interstate lanes for hours.
The accident happened on I-65 at the 110.5 mile marker near the I-70 south split.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says I-65 northbound and I-70 eastbound will remain closed until the Virginia Avenue bridge is repaired.
Designers will be working throughout the night, developing plans to repair the bridge. I-65 northbound and I-70 eastbound will reopen when designs are completed midday Saturday, according to a release.
State Police and INDOT say I-70 eastbound traffic is being diverted to I-65 southbound at the south split and I-65 northbound traffic is being diverted to I-70 westbound.
The accident caused the beam on the Virginia Avenue bridge to split. Police say traffic on the bridge was closed in both directions for a short period of time but traffic has reopened.
I-65 southbound and I-70 westbound will remain open.
No injuries were reported in the accident.
