Sex offenders get different labels

Crime dictates risk level for offender

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Convicted sex offender Shawn Corbally now sits in jail accused of repeatedly raping a Greenwood woman in front of her 1-year-old child. Corbally is a registered sex offender. He's categorized in the highest risk level, as a sexually violent predator.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department tracks registered sex offenders.  There are a handful of deputies who make sure registered sex offenders are where they're supposed to be and they have 2 deputies designated to sexually violent predators. “Sexually Violent Predators are the worst of the worst,” explains Lt Robert R Hanna Jr, who is responsible for the sex offender list.

Lt Hanna says the Indiana Department of Corrections has separated the offenders into 3 risk levels. One is a registered sex offender, the second level is an offender against children where the victim is under 13, and the 3rd risk level is sexually violent predators who have multiple offenses or have committed a violent attack. ”About a third of them qualify as sexually violent predators,” says Lt Hanna.

There are around 1470 registered sex offenders in Marion County and of that number; Lt Hanna says 426 are classified as sexually violent predators. In Marion County the deputies keep close tabs on the violent predators. “Our sheriff stepped it up and we went ahead with every 30 days, just because they are the predators. Really they're the ones that commit again,” explains Deputy Brandon Allen, who tracks offenders.

Marion County's policy is tougher than state law. The state requires 90 day checks for sexually violent predators and yearly checks for other registered sex offenders.
