Sick calls shut down Lawrence Fire Station

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) - A fire station closed sign blew in the wind at 59th Street and Lee Road on Friday. The impromptu closure happened after five EMT workers and one firefighter called in sick.

Mayor Dean Jessup pink-slipped 24 EMT workers earlier this month. Jessup scheduled Friday as the workers last day on the job.

Engine 40 is facing another change starting Monday when only ambulances will be dispatched from the fire house.

Firefighters in Lawrence will also run those ambulances in addition to battling fires.

Brandon Wilch has worked as an EMT worker for Lawrence for the past two years. Wilch did not call in sick and worked his full schedule.

"Knowing this is the last day we will do this for the city of Lawrence - it's has been a rough day," said Wilch.

He told 24-Hour News 8 that residents will not see the same level of services.
