INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police are looking for multiple suspects after one person was shot and killed Wednesday morning on the south side.

Police said the victim, John Yingling, 38, was killed in his vehicle leaving his house in the 3300 block of Babbette Court around 8 a.m. and was on the phone with his wife, who was not in the area. She heard a scuffle, heard him in distress and called 9-1-1. The man was shot and killed in his vehicle.

Police don't know if this incident is connected to other south side robberies, including a person who was shot Wednesday morning at 56th Street and Dandy Trail Road while walking his dog.

Police were pursuing a Blue Ford Explorer just before noon, and the incident ended in a crash. It wasn't clear if the chase was tied to the morning homicide.

Southport Elementary School is on a precautionary lockdown Wednesday morning because of the shooting death.

According to school officials, police conducted a sweep in area and then allowed buses to head to the school. Nine buses were diverted.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call IMPD Homicide Detectives at 327-3475 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS (8477). Callers can also text “INDYCS” plus tip information to 274627.
