Stage hand dies in fair collapse

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Nate Byrd was an experienced stage hand who routinely climbed up stage trusses for concerts to run spotlight. For the Sugarland concert, Saturday night, Nate climbed up the truss in the back right corner of the stage, just minutes before the wind blew in.

"He was pretty fearless and I think that's why they liked Nate so well and they called him in for these events because he had a lot of confidence in the things he did. He was a good climber and he was the go-to guy,” said Nate’s older brother, Randy, who spent the night in the hospital with the rest of their family.

Nathan Byrd had been working as a stagehand for about 20 years and was one of the few experienced stagehands light enough - at roughly 140 pounds - to scale scaffolding and work lighting rigs, his brother said.

But when the fast moving wind moved through Saturday,

and Nate, a month shy of his 52nd birthday, went down with it. He was rushed to Wishard Hospital where he spent the night. He was pronounced dead at 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

"We’ll just remember the good times,” said longtime family friend Sandy Castelle. “He was such a good person. That's going to keep us going."

Nate leaves behind a 15-year old son, Trevor Lee Byrd, and a 13-year old daughter Nately Fay Byrd.
