INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana's chief justice is calling on legislators to passing an overhaul of the state's criminal code

Chief Justice Brent Dickson also backed efforts to improve the juvenile justice system in his State of the Judiciary address to the General Assembly on Tuesday.

Dickson urged lawmakers to pass a bill aimed at easing pressure on the state's prisons by making criminal penalties more appropriate.

He also touted a court initiative designed to reduce reliance on juvenile detention centers and help young offenders get their lives back on track.

Dickson noted that the five-member Supreme Court has gotten a new chief justice and two new justices in the past year, including only its second female justice ever.
