Travelers react to new carry-on rules

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - There are now new rules for what you can take on your airplane. The Transportation Security Administration says it is relaxing the list of banned carry-on items to align with international safety rules.

It will also allow security officers to spend more time looking for "higher threat items" like explosives.

The changes set to take place April 25 have a lot of people scratching their heads.  

Jim Whaley said that small knives aren’t a threat.

“I think it is a little confusing to keep changing all the rules on people,” Jim Whaley said. “We've always been able to have knives in first class with our meals when they give them to us.”

Whaley, who was waiting for his wife at the Indianapolis International Airport Wednesday afternoon said he isn’t worried about the changes. TSA will also allow small souvenir or novelty baseball bats. Fliers can also travel with up to two golf clubs through security checkpoints.

“If the passengers were to get together they could overpower anybody with anything like that,” Whaley said. “It would be kind of hard to swing something in that kind of area.

By contrast, Leslie Noel is uneasy about the rollback.

“The way things are right now with the guns, and now bats and stuff, I wouldn’t feel safe.”

The TSA has been gradually scaling back on heavy restrictions. The ban on cigarette lighters was lifted in 2007.
