Valentine's Day on a budget

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - If you haven't gotten your sweetie something for Valentine's Day, you better hustle.

Americans spend a lot of money on the holiday of love.

The National Retail Federation says men spend $108 on their sweethearts. Women spend about $53.

There are ways to celebrate on a budget. You can give your sweetheart something special and memorable without breaking the bank.

Balloons filled with helium work well. Write down what you love most about your significant other on an index card and attach it to the balloon. 24-Hour News 8 found retailers selling latex balloons filled with helium for $1.

If you didn't tie the knot on this day of love or forgot to grab that big bouquet of roses for your sweetie, fear not.

You can have a romantic dinner for $10 at White Castle. 

It's a tradition.

The fast food joint will shut down counters and transform into its version of fine dining.

White Castle’s Sally Brown says visitors will enjoy hostess seating, candlelit dining and your own server.

“It’s all at the table. You never have to get up. It’s all very affordable,” Brown said. “In today's economy it is hard for people to go other places.”

$1 is all you need if you want to take your sweetie roller skating. But you must wear red.

Skateland, located at 3902 N Glen Arm Rd, on the city's west side will rock from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Don’t have skates? Wear red and rental is $3.

At the end of the day, Steven Lacks, a florist with Marsh, says it’s the effort that counts.

“If you do have somebody special in your life or have just been together since the prehistoric ages,” Steven Lacks said, “it is a good day to show how much you love somebody.”
