INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Two years after his death, the family of Eric Wells is continuing a tradition he started as a child — raising money for the less fortunate.
Monday morning, his parents presented a check to the Dayspring Homeless Shelter for $20,000, to benefit homeless kids.
It was money was raised earlier this month during the Eric Wells Memorial Foundation Benefit Ride.
Eric Wells was killed two years ago when IMPD officer David Bisard crashed into a group of motorcyclists.
At the event, Eric's mom, Mary, said she hoped for 50 riders but more than 300 showed up. She had hoped to raise $20,000 but only expected to raise between $12,000 and $13,000. She was excited when they raised the full amount.
“I was so excited,” she said. “It's like we did it, we did it! We really weren't expecting it, so it was really, it was just fantastic.”
Mary said Eric was planning a benefit ride when he was killed. She said she's now grateful to turn the tragedy into something positive.
Bisard is expected back in court Sept. 6.
